I’m a private maths home tutor in Pune and have been teaching from last 7 years now so I can share my experience  with you and give your some general advice.

Always have your schedule and plan it

Don’t available for anytime anywhere as that’s what parents  will expect from all home tutors. You have to plan your time for tutoring and note down time slots you are comfortable to take. For example if you are not comfortable for early morning tuition than never say yes for it. Take your comfortable time, as it will become hectic for you. You will not be  able to manage your whole day if you do not have habit to wake up at early morning. Trust me it is frustrating after sometime so  I always preferred evening time or late afternoons. That is what’s work best for me. So you can check your comfortable times.  In addition to that always make schedule of your time slots. Just check you are not giving same time slots to two different parents. That’s why I recommend you to have Google Calendar or calendar APP to take care about your schedule. It will help you to manage yourself and able to give idea about your time availability. After two years of tutoring I understand it better and now make it a habit. Getting students for tutoring is not a problem because Sonlinetutor helps me to fix my slots in very less time.

Transportation

Always decide at first  what distance you can  cover for tutoring. Never try to cover long distances because you will ended up with less tuition and your maximum time just go into travelling. Do not do it even if you have your own vehicle to commute. Because travelling time and travelling cost both are high for it. When I started tutoring ,I was like to accept each kind of tutoring proposal, which results I was travelling 20 KM each day. After sometime I left all long distance tuition and take students from one area. You have to wait for sometime but you definitely get students in your locality.

Prices

You might know few tutors who get paid Rs 750 to Rs 1500 for  an hour tutoring but for fresher part time tutor always  put your rates bit lower than other tutors . This will help you in two ways , you are able to book a demo class at least while having a less experience and chances for tuition  conversion also increase. Always  look for  what other tutor charge in your area and go little bit low , not to gain more clients by undercutting the competition, but because you’re new and inexperienced tutor.

Experience

Make sure you have all documents and references from previous clients with you while going for the demo. I always recommend new tutor to make a mini CV which includes your local address, permanent address, mobile number,Qualification and previous clients references etc. You can also includes  ID proof xerox with it to increase your credibility. Always try to include previous student’s grades and what subject tutoring you’ve done in CV. Don’t lie. If you haven’t done before than never say yes for it.

In first demo class never say “I’ve never done any part time tutoring before but I would like to start from you ” say something more like: “I have experience in part time tutoring other students in my school as well as I was teaching my friends and family, and am now become a full time tutor.”

Contact

Always try to set up a connection between you , student and parents in first demo class. Do not start you demo class from teaching. Try to talk with them , discuss why they want a home tutor. Planning lessons

This is very important after a demo session. If you got selected than always try to make a lesson plans for a week at least. Always try to  find out in advance when they are having  exams, time table for exams,subjects to be covered,portion to be completed, aims etc. and plan accordingly  a schedule for each student. Always maintain a file for it and record each student plan with you. So you can check later what to be covered and what to be teach. Try to take a xeros of syllabus and keep record in your personal file so that you know what to be get done for the classes. Once you’ve done for one student you will understand how much easier and  relaxing for your to take care about each and every student.

The lessons

Be flexible to teaching methodologies. Adjust to student’s  preferred learning pace.Never go with only tradition teaching methodologies. Try to include visuals, animation and other charts to explain the concept. Try to find out which methods work best for your student and design custom teaching plans and teaching methodologies for him.

Other

Be lenient but always ask payments on time. So focus on money but in flexible way.

Never Lie

Don’t lie with student or pretend to know something you don’t. Student will catch up with you eventually and you have bad impression with student .So If you don’t know the answer to a particular question then ask for time.  Tell them you’ll get back to them after a day. But it does not mean you leave that question, try to solve it by your own and explain in next class. Always do it. That will increase your trust and repo with student.
