The Brass Tacks About Tutoring

Like any job, tutoring children is often idealized and romanticized by young people preparing for a career in education.  Then once the reality of what life is like as a tutor hits, it can come as a rude shock.  This does not mean that the ideals and values of tutoring the next generation of youth and the great thrill of seeing a young mind come alive with knowledge are not wonderful and worthy of respect and praise. In truth, anyone who makes it in the field of tutoring must have that idealism that is a deep part of your motivation system because it will be those values that will help you get past the hard times that tutoring, particularly in a public school situation often brings with a job of tutor.

But along with the values and ideals, we need to mix that inner drive with a strong dose of reality so that when you show up for your first day and work through your first year of tutoring, you are not broadsided by some of the challenges and frustrations that lie ahead.  A few moments talking about the brass tacks of a tutoring career can help you prepare for the negatives so they are less potent and less able to stop you from being a success in your tutoring career.

Probably one of the areas of tutoring that often causes high tutor stress and burn out is the level of government regulation and the extent that the administration of a school gets in the way of the tutoring process.  Many times in public school it almost seems like education is of a lesser value than paying attention to rules and regulations and maintaining order and discipline in the school.

When you come to that tutoring position with priority placed on tutoring students the subject matter at hand and see them begin to excel academically and you find academics taking a back seat to the schools administrative issues, to discipline issues and to what seems to be a nonstop flood of forms and requirements for every governmental program imaginable, that can cause frustration about the job you have taken in that school.

Under funding of education probably ranks second greatest frustration with the working world of tutoring.  This lack of funding is evident in your pay and in how well the classes you need to teach are funded.  You may not have the supplies you need and many tutors actually find themselves buying supplies from their own money just to make sure their tutoring is successful.  That is the contrast between the public’s lack of substantial support for education and your deep commitment to it.  But the funding issue can also result in overcrowding of classrooms because the school cannot afford more classrooms or sufficient number of tutors to handle a high student population.

The third problem that often broadsides new tutors is that many students are not the angels we wish they would be.  Especially in a public school setting, you will have in every class some students who don’t care about academics and would rather disrupt the class than allow you to teach those who do want to learn.  It takes some real experience and some coaching from experienced tutors in how to handle this kind of student but at least be aware that they will be in your classroom day one and all year long.

It takes some innovative thinking and almost stubborn insistence on staying positive to be a successful tutor under circumstances like this.  But if you keep your focus on the kids and on those moments that do come in each school year when you really connect with students and you see them get excited about what you are sharing, that one moment makes dealing with all of the other frustrations entirely worth it.

How much should I charge for tuition ?

Started your career as a home tutor? If yes so than congrats to become a private tutor. As a new tutor you have so many doubt in your mind. Out of that few we mention below

“How much should I charge for class …… student?”.

“How to prepare for the demo class?”

“How to find out new student ?”etc.

These are few basic questions which we find common among all new tutors. As each of this questions require detailed explanation and vast points to be covered, we include only about tuition fee calculation analysis in this article. As a fresher, private tutor has to take care about so many factors while calculating the price of tuition.  It is bit tricky to find tuition fee , but if tutor do not want to get into this math, can simply call any local tuition agency or tuition service provider, ask about prices and get done(most of the tutor do that). But that will not solve your complete problem, as this service provider tell you a common rate which might not be compatible for everyone. So we suggest, do some calculation before fixing your hourly or monthly tuition rates.  In this article we include some of the points to be consider before calculation begin.

Everyone has to include some of these factors before starting to calculate the tuition fee. This factors are current market rate, travelling allowances , time and days to be devoted for tutoring, tutor experience, subjects to be covered, Efforts to put for student etc. We explain each of the factor in detail below :-

  1. Current market rate :-

At the first try to find out current market rate. It is the first basic step which not only help tutor to find out base rates but also give an idea of what other competitors are charging. For an example, A tuition agency or tutoring company in same area charges 450 rs for an hour and tutor is planning to charge 550 rs per hour than it decreases chances of  selection , because other competitors are much cheaper. In other hand , if tutor charging 350 rs which is much lower than other offers may results in increase selection, but soon tutor find he is  earning less than others for same time period. So we suggest tutor can make fix minimum 400 rs per session to fight for initial competition. It will not only make easy to acquire new students but also save tutor to hamper its pocket.

  1. Travelling allowances :-

This contribute major portion in your tuition fee decision if you are taking home tuitions. For online tutors this cost is none. It’s a fact that for travelling tutor either use personal mode of transportation like bike else use public transportation. This cost  completely depend upon distance covered by a tutor. Before deciding fee tutor has to calculate the distance and than find out petrol charges or transportation charges. This basic charges should be added to your fee.

  1. Time and days for tuition:-

The other factor which should be consider is number of hours per day dedicated for particular student. Tutor has to understand student requirement , is student want hourly classes  or monthly classes. If the fee is decided on hourly basis than tutor can calculate as an individual class but if it is monthly bases than the total price go down. For instance,  a tutor charge 400 Rs per hour , but student want to take classes on monthly bases, while considering weekend off , the total days cover by a tutor per month are 22. So considering with hourly rates the total amount is 8800 Rs per month, which is not feasible for parents to pay, so here negotiation come into account and tutor can give much feasible rate which can around in between 5500/- to 6000/- a month. This sets a good example to understand the monthly rates and hourly rates which is common in India.

4.Subject offered:-

In this list one more things we can not forget to discuss is subject to be cover for tuition. Majority of students from school level ask for a private tutor for maths and science, whereas few of them ask for all subjects. As number of subjects increases , tutor efforts also increases. The complete pressure of subjects completion before the exam buildup on tutor. So as subject increases, the responsibility and work also increase. Tutor has to estimate charges according to that. Sometime you have to cover extra classes before an exam to finish the syllabus. Sonlinetutor.com always suggest its tutor to convey about extra charges to parents or calculate charges according to that which can added to monthly remuneration.

  1. Extra efforts to put for student:-

At last but not least, tutor should know about their students. We always recommend tutor to take a counselling session of child before classes begin, this will not only help private tutor to understand the weak areas of student but also give opportunity to design customized teaching plans for student. As extra efforts and out of the box methodologies results in fee hike, because personal tutor has to put extra efforts for student and it become one specialization add on for tutor which distinguish him with other tutor. In Depth tutor find  this weak areas can be anything such as weak in maths calculation to fear for exam. For this instance we take an example of our one student. He was in class 9th and continuously not scoring well for the exam. When first time we receive his enquiry , his parents told us that their son was not interested in studies at all. But when our tutors did counselling , he found that student was having trouble in examfear and have some issues with remembering things. From dedicated teaching plans and methods we solved the problems before exams started, which results in improve grades in exam. As tutor work extra than its regular curriculum  , tutor has rights to ask for extra money for his efforts.

In conclusion we can give basic formula to calculate tuition fee , which is

Tuition fee = Travelling allowances +efforts + time consumption

To help tutor further , we included basic rate chart which depends on  grade , city type and  duration. These all rates are based monthly and hourly bases so tutor has to decide by his own. This rates can vary city to city , we are giving an idea on the basis of our research. You can put your efforts to find rates further

Grades City type Duration (hourly) Duration(monthly)
Class 1st to 5th Tier 1 200-300 Rs 3000-4500 Rs
